Every year around this time, 30 million fanatical souls consult their player rankings, cheat sheets and crystal balls to select their Fantasy Football team for the upcoming NFL season. I am one such obsessed soul. Last Sunday, I participated in my Somerville League draft, along with nine other “team owners” from Chicago, Detroit, DC, Seattle, New York, Munich and Zurich. Each of us has selected the players we think will capture the league championship. Winning brings with it a four-figure cash prize and, more importantly, the coveted Sombardy Trophy, a golden football award named for Somerville and legendary coach Vince Lombardi.

In my four years in the league I’ve made the playoffs twice and lost the championship once. With the highest scoring team in the league last year, I thought I had the players to go all the way. Alas, it was not to be. I was bounced in the first playoff game, and all I could do was look forward to next year. Next year is now here.

Below is my roster for the 2010 season (named after my ancestry):

Fighting Irish

QB Philip Rivers

RB Steven Jackson

RB Frank Gore

WR/RB Brandon Marshall

WR Anquan Boldin

WR Hines Ward

WR Jeremy Maclin

TE Visanthe Shiancoe

D/ST Bengals

K Jay Feely

BENCH Chester Taylor

BENCH Jerome Harrison

BENCH Steve Breaston

BENCH Terrell Owens

BENCH Alex Smith

BENCH Bernard Scott

BENCH Bernard Berrian

BENCH Mike Williams

BENCH Heath Miller

BENCH D. McCluster

Somerville—and NFL action—began yesterday, with the Vikings in St. Louis. I’ll keep you all posted on my quest for the Sombardy.

B team wins championship playoffs, A team upset in semifinals!

My “Chips” team won the Seattle B Spring League 2010 Darts Championship; this follows our Fall/Winter League Championship. It was a great match at Cooper’s Ale House. We were down 9-6 (first team to 11 wins) and ended up prevailing 11-9 over “Who Darted.” See our photos here. Individually, I ended the season ranked #14 of 31 players. Overall a great clutch team effort, led by captain Kirbie Predmore and fellow arrow slingers Russell Nash, Tim Hannon, Frank Martel, and Rob Schwenn.

Meanwhile, Gary Meyers’ A team, “Dartmatter” (Gary, Bill Baltra, Andy Baker, and Taylor Callaway) got whipped in the semi-finals by the “Roach Motels,” whom “Dartmatter” had handily beaten twice in the regular season. I asked Gary what happened, and he said, “Those Roaches kicked our butts.” Gary finished up at #9 of 46, individually.

Summer League Doubles starts July 8.

Currently Chips is in second place behind Who Darted. We play out of Cooper’s Ale House every Wednesday night. Dart Matter also sits in second place in their division, represents Cooper’s too and plays Thursday nights.

There’s typically about 40 players per league. Gary’s currently 10th in A league and I’m, let’s just say, working my way up the standings in B league.

Gary reports that the A league has better team names, specifically the Roach Motels, league powerhouse Aucham’s Razor, Knarr-cosis (representing the Knarr Shipwreck Lounge), and what has to be the all-time favorite, the No Talent Ass Clowns.

Intense!

That is how I would sum up the championship dart finals that Gary Meyers and I, and the rest of our Chips team participated in on Wednesday night at Coopers, our home tavern. We were matched up against The Dart Bags, and they were ready to go, jumping out to a 5 -1 lead. First team to 11 wins took the crown, so at this point we were beginning to get a little concerned. We crept back into it, and before you knew it we were tied at 7-7.

Then we went to work and took the next two matches. Two more wins and the title was ours. This is where the atmosphere got intense. We were up both games, on the cusp of the championship, and then lost them both on the crucial bulls-eye throws.

So, with the score tied 10 to 10 we go to the “team” match of 801 to decide the night. Neck and neck throughout the whole game and it comes down to the first team to “double out.” Each player had an opportunity to win it, to be the hero, and each player failed, not once but twice. Then our team captain, Kirbie steps up for Chips and nails the double 4. VICTORY!!!! Well done guys. Cheers to a great season.

The long 18-week dart season is now down to the final match. Our team, Chips, took first place in the regular season standings, with Gary ranking individually at number three in the league, and myself at number eleven. The playoff format is a best of 21 games, and we were matched up against Dart Vader in the first round last Wednesday night. Vader smacked Gary down in the first match, before we ran off a 10-game winning streak, culminating in an 11 – 2 rout. On to the championship next Wednesday (2/3) against The Dart Bags. First dart is at 7:30. Get there early for the best view of the action (if you can call dart throwing “action”).

After a bye week that conveniently fell between Christmas and New Year’s, the Chips team was back in action last night taking on the dreaded Dart Vader. The Chips team was really challenged through the first half of the match. Down 7 games to 5, the Chips pulled off a stunning 9 straight wins to take home a 14 – 7 victory. A solid win over a good throwing Dart Vader team. I wouldn’t be surprised if we face off against these guys in the first round of the playoffs.

With two weeks left in the regular season the Chips continue to maintain a strong lead in the team standings. Individually Gary and I both had quality nights, each going 5 and 1. Gary jumped up to 4th in the overall individual league standings while I’m left at 10th for the umpteenth week.

Next Wednesday evening we’re on the road again, visiting the Knarrcoleptics at the Knarr Tavern in the U District. Check out the Knarr reviews posted on Yelp (especially Nicholas E. – he’s dead on). Hope to see you there.

Enjoying Wednesday nights in Seattle’s best and worst taverns and dive bars.

After two years of finishing out of the playoffs, half the H/M Spike dart team defected to another team (you know who you are). The remaining Spikers’ contracts were bought for a Black Butte Porter and bowl of pretzels. Gary Meyers and myself now play for Cooper’s Alehouse “Chips” team.

After four weeks, we’re hanging on to first place over Dart Vader. We squeaked past Who Darted (no kidding) for a third straight win, but were humbled last week by the Blind Nuts with an 11 – 10 loss.

Individually, I dropped to 8th in the individual league rankings out of close to 50 players, and Gary has been just shy of the top 10 all season.

Stop by Cooper’s this Wednesday to watch us take on the Unimeese. First dart at 7:30 PM.
